Ten Gold Socks

Christmas Bow

Clean, fresh, painted walls and no hooks!

I was faced with a particularly difficult decorating issue this year.  I really wanted to hang Christmas decorations, however with recent renovations I was left with newly painted walls and a scowling husband at any mention of sticky tape, tack or nails.

We have an old fireplace that would be perfect for bringing story books to life.  The kiddies are reading stories about Christmas and seeing snow men, fireplaces, stockings and snow.  I can’t do much about the snow but I can create a fun and memorable atmosphere with the fireplace.  Not only for the kiddies but for the teens too.  I was wondering how though, it’s surrounded with exposed brick which nothing sticks too.  The mantle is varnished so tape would damage it and with the humidity ‘tack’ is a ‘fail’.

Funny timing because amidst my dilemma I was sent a bag of NEW and innovative Command™ ‘damage free’ CLEAR hooks to trial.   Did you know 3M have a new CLEAR range of ‘damage free’ hooks?  I didn’t, that’s why I hadn’t thought to use them.  I didn’t want white, exposed hooks everywhere on my walls.  I have the regular range though.  In the kids rooms, we have hats and coats hanging from them.  I certainly wouldn’t have considered using Command ‘damage free’ hooks for hanging decorations, until now!  Yes I’m impressing the ‘damage free’ because that’s what I’ve experienced, which great relief.

These ones are clear, so much more discreet!  I sat, coffee in hand, wracking my brain trying to come up with something clever to hang with the hooks and then my ‘fireplace’ project pinged into mind. Actually forget the ping it was more  liking walking into a wall.

 Three questions.

1/ Would Command™ hooks stick to exposed brick?

2/  Would Command™ hooks truly hold the weight without coming off and damaging the item?

3/ Would Command™ hooks really be ‘discreet’?  There’s nothing worse than seeing hooks sticking out from a display.

The first test was two beautiful large bows I had purchased without thinking about how I was going to hang them up.  I had trialled ‘tack’ and double sided tape and failed and consequently both bows were sitting in the cupboard sadly not used.  Out they came and up went the first two hooks.  I placed the bows up, took photos and went to bed. Actually I have to admit the bows are heavy so I figured they would be on the floor by morning.  To my genuine surprise they are still securely on the wall and it’s now been 48 hours.

Definitely discreet hooks.

Twice I had to pull off hooks because I had not left enough room! Twice the hooks came off cleanly leaving no residue and causing no damage (phew!).  I am surprised that they stuck to brick!

Thanks to Command™ Clear Hooks from 3M  we are ready for Christmas and I’ll be making sure I have bigger and better plans for next year now that there are no limitations on where and how I can stick decorations!

PaBumpy is going to be one very happy man.   I’ll also be using Command™ clear hooks to hang up a few spare rubbish bags on Christmas morning too, for all that wrapping!  The hooks can be easily removed when no longer needed, that’s a win for sure.

As for all those gold socks, imagine what Mrs Centipede goes through!

If I’m sent a product and it fails my testing I simply won’t put it on my blog.  So you can be assured that if you are reading this it’s because I’ve personally trialled and put the product to a rigorous test of my own first.

    Those decorations look fabulous, Jules!
We use Command Hooks all the time. I don’t know what we did before we knew they existed!

I seriously didn’t think of the hooks until the campaign. I guess a great part of some of these is as a blogger I learn more than I ever imagined.

I really need some of these hooks… Great Christmas decorations! Best wishes for the New Year!

Hi rita, thank you, Happy New Year to you too. I’ve taken down the decorations and I’m happy to say no varnish came off the wood. “phew” I’m buying more of these this week.

Thanks Rita, Happy New Year to you too.

Great idea – do they work by suction?

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

No, they have 3M double sided tape that pulls down to remove. Not the regular tape. Check out the site (there’s a link above) where you will find a better explanation along with the no damage explanation. I wouldn’t trust suction, our heat makes things drop off walls easily!

I’ve seen their advertising ads but this is the first first-hand report I’ve read from someone who actually used them. Thanks for the info. I’ll be ready for the next Christmas holiday as I like to hang things as well but don’t like the damage left behind.

I was nervous trialling them on the wood so I tried a hidden spot first, to be honest I did expect the varnish to be damaged but I’ve removed all 10 hooks now and there isn’t a single mark left. I did find some paint fell off a wall in the bedroom when I removed the hook but that turned out because the paint is many, many years old and dry and brittle, even tack pulls it off. Don’t wait for Christmas, I’ve now gone ahead and hung a really heavy pic with them. They have weight category on the packet. It’s been a hot and humid week but the pic hasn’t fallen down!
