Cheers To The End Of Sticky Hell

IMG_3882

IMG_3880WARNING: If you have a fetish for sticky contact and spending countless precious hours fighting to keep the hairs on your arms instead of permanently joining the cover of your child’s school book then you will want to skip this product supplied post.

For the rest of you, fill your glasses and raise them with an almighty CHEERS to the end of years of responsible, sticky hell.

I am a sticky mum failure.  I’ve lost more skin cells and hair follicles to the book contacting crusade than any wax treatment. OK sure slight huge exaggeration but you get the idea.  NOT A FAN!

I’ve never had a problem covering my children’s books, but when I was in school, it was a nightmare!! Every year, it would stick to the carpet, get hairs stuck to it, get bubbled as I’d leave air pockets in it…and the list goes on!

I’ve seen some samples of awesome work from mother’s like you so I bow down at your alter Michelle, awesome.

Well I sure wish I knew about these before I just covered my son’s books in contact! Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I expected it was going to be. At least, not with the plain stuff. The batman foil stuff however – NIGHTMARE! There’s so many to chose from, they look fantastic! x Aroha #teamIBOT

Wow, you are super organised, ours haven’t been delivered yet so I have bags, uniforms and shoes all ready to go. Well done.

These are awesome aren’t they? I had a bunch for my niece but have stolen some to keep for my little man’s drawing books.

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

There is one that’s covered in images of yummy sweet things, hence we are not keeping that one :-) I can imagine my kids salivating instead of focusing on school work. Great for the older child though.

Tangled up with all the contact stuck to me, the books and the dog….not pleasant to say the least especially for the long haired dog..a little bald on one side

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

      Oh that poor dog,

  • http://twitter.com/snacky09 Sonya Keeble

The thought of contacting books fills me with dread every year. Make a mistake and you need a jack hammer to get that stuff off the book. It is easier to buy a new book.

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

So true Sonya, some of them totally tear the book up when you try to correct the mess. I feel intimidated when I hand them to the teacher. Like I was back at school again! I’m sure they have a good laugh in the staff room though.

  • Ying Ying TAN

Just the friction sound of those plastic book covers makes my hair stand on end, literally! (like how some people cannot stand the screeching noise…) I had to wear ear plugs wrapping those books!

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

TJTeen can’t stand the squeak of packing foam when unpacking a product box. Totally understand ‘hair raising’.

  • armstrongsarah

I think every mother has a nightmare story about covering school books – now I know why my Mum hated it. I always end up with bubbles creases, books that won’t fold properly, contact in a ball, me in a ball rocking back and forth screaming “Bloody Contact”

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

I had strong visual images of you rocking and screaming, ‘thanks’ for the laugh.

  • Effie Bakkalis

I absolutely, positively, CANNOT cover school books with sticky contact and end up with a nice result. I always manage to create heaps of bubbles and unsightly creases!!

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

Effie, I’ve tried to follow the ‘guidelines’ and it comes out bubbleville. Especially the newer fancy foil ones.

  • Rachael Rowberry

I guess it was my mum’s nightmare every year as I had to cover my own books and do my brothers, there were less screams in the house and although not perfectly done I had an excuse I was just a “KID”

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

Rachael, I remember sitting for hours doing the same as a kid, except it was thick brown paper and sticky tape! I guess I’m a tad old. :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/Cheryl.Moulton30 Cheryl Moulton

When I was at school, I hated when it came to covering books, because we didn’t have a lot of money and my Mum would get scraps of plastic for us to use, it was ma huge embarrasment to a child

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

wow Cheryle you just gave me a flash back. When brown paper wasn’t around I can remember teachers huffing and puffing about my books being the ONLY ones not covered, and my mother cutting up shopping bags which were brown paper bags back then. While it was a ‘poor’ option it would be considered wise recycling now.

      • http://twitter.com/LilyatIW Lily

Paper bags were all the kids in my school ever used, same with other local schools. Then we would decorate them and doodle during class. Later on, when my older kids were in school, they had the fancier premade printed ones. No one ever used contact paper, our covers weren’t supposed to be permanent. That’s a new one for me.

I’m sure your not a sticky Mum failure – just a busy one who has better things to do Jules!

I am not very good at covering books – mostly they end up with bubbles and not so good looking creases.

I’m a weird person who loves contact. Just do :)

i hate contact and can never use it it sticks more to me and everything in the housethan the books we dont get a long

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

Hi Jody, I use pins to prick the contact to release the air from bubbles, still a fail!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=673457978 Jody Jamieson

thats a good idea i havent tried that thanx for the tip

  • kerry santillo

I dont think this is nightmarish but I hate contact , always have always will. I get so frustrated and angry as it never looks like other mums kids when I manage to get it on. A couple of times I have paid a friend of mine to do it !!! its sounds awful but Contact scares me!!!!

    • http://thebumpiestpath.com/ Jules

Kerry I think if someone set up a pay service for contacting books they would be rich, however instead there is now these awesome pre made covers, YAY for 2kool4skool

  • Suzie Elo

Everytime I try to contact my kid’s books I always end up having more contact on my body than anywhere else!

  • Michelle van Schouwen

My nightmare story is that I somehow always manage to get my hair stuck in the contact so the kids end up with hairy books and I end up with less hair. Using contact makes you pull out your hair anyway I guess!!

  • Julie B

I hate contact. Oh the horror of bubbles and ripples.

  • Eleise Bott

I don’t have a nightmare story yet of covering the kids books, but I had to do my own when I was in school. I remember helping the librarian cover books with contact and completely ruined a book. Found you on Blogs and PR

  • http://www.facebook.com/trina.bassula Trina Bassula

In high school we had a pupil free day – I was 1 of 2 kids who went to school that day (my parents worked so I HAD to go!) I spent the *entire* day covering school textbooks with contact – my fingers were so red and sore by the end of the day! Up until then I used to love contacting – popping the bubbles with a pin and smoothing them out and making it perfect – but I really can’t face it anymore lol!!

  • Stacey Shailer

I had a sheet of contact spread out on the table, took the backing off it and then leaned over the table to grab the book I needed to cover, not realising my waist-long hair had fallen over my shoulder and onto the exposed sticky contact…was a nightmare getting it all unstuck, poor hubby copped a few choice words from me as he helped get it off my ponytail!

  • Kaz Purtill-Wright

My daughters school got in a a bunch of new text books and asked some P&C members if they would volunteer to cover them. Well sucker me put up my hand. There were 5 parents and over 300 text books. In one HUGE day we sat at the school and covered and covered and covered and covered and covered……..well you get the drift. I think I am permanently scarred form the memory.

  • Jasmine

I remember covering my school book upside down. I had to stare at my upside down picture for a year

  • Chont

Yes! I’m absolutely hopeless at covering. In fact I refuse to use contact, because you can imagine the meltdowns I faced when my autistic son saw my lumpy covering.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chell.gray.1 Michelle Gray

no yet, my daughter is only starting school this year :)

  • Jessie Hay

My nightmare story occurs at the start of every year- I have a stack of books there (well over 30) to cover and I keep procrastinating- I hate covering books!!
It doesn’t help that I have 3 in primary this year!

  • Tanya Berglund

Yey, I won, thank you so much!! This will be so helpful!!

    • Michelle van Schouwen

      Congrats Tanya!
